Home care in Surrey
Surrey is the fastest-growing large city in British Columbia and it is enormous: Whalley to Crescent Beach is a half-hour drive on a good day. Care here lives or dies on realistic scheduling.
Fraser Health, and the assessment queue
Surrey’s publicly funded home support is arranged through Fraser Health. As elsewhere, get assessed first: it is income-tested and if it meets the need it is cheaper than we are.
The practical difficulty in Surrey is demand, which grows with the city. Families often look at private care because they need it to start now, and cannot wait.
Fraser Health also administers CSIL for eligible Surrey and White Rock residents. See our costs and funding guide.
Coming home from Surrey Memorial or Peace Arch
Surrey Memorial and, in White Rock, Peace Arch Hospital are where most local discharges originate. Post-surgical discharges from the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre are quicker still, and people are often home the same day and are not always ready for it.
Our hospital to home service is built for exactly that first fortnight.
Multi-generational and multilingual
Surrey has a large South Asian community and many multi-generational households, and both shape what families look for. Often it is not personal care, which the family is already providing, but respite so they can keep going, and a caregiver who shares their language.
Local knowledge
The distances are real, and we schedule for them
Surrey is big enough that a caregiver crossing it several times in a shift will run late. We group visits by area, schedule for the real distance, and tell you honestly when we cannot cover an address well.
Surrey Memorial discharges move fast
Pressure on beds means discharges can come quickly. If someone is admitted and the words "going home soon" are used, that is the moment to call us, not the morning of.
South Surrey and White Rock age differently
South Surrey and White Rock have a markedly older population than the north of the city, with a lot of people who retired to the coast and whose adult children live elsewhere in the country. That combination, being older, well-housed, and geographically isolated from family, is exactly where private care fills a gap the public system cannot.
